Field Report from Kunar Earthquake-Affected Areas
Posted byrebuildaid/Demo
On the night of 31 August 2025 (10 Sunbula 1404), at 11:40 PM, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Kunar province and its neighboring regions, causing widespread destruction across six districts: Nurgal, Chawkay, Chapa Dara, Watapur, Khas Kunar, and Narang.
The disaster resulted in more than 2,500 deaths and 3,700 injuries, with the Mazar Dara area of Nurgal and Diwa Gul Dara in Chawkay districts suffering the heaviest human and material losses.
While the earthquake impacted all affected districts, families who completely lost their homes—especially children, women, and elderly persons without caregivers—have been relocated to several temporary camps, including:
Osmani Camp (Khas Kunar District), Central Camp (Chawkay District), Anderlach Camp (Chawkay District), Patan Camp, Mazar Dara Camp, and Zuri Baba Camp (Nurgal District).
Currently, these families are living in tents provided by national and international humanitarian agencies.
In Osmani Camp of Khas Kunar District, 585 families (a total of 3,527 individuals) are living in 251 tents, among whom 107 deaths and 158 injuries have been officially recorded.
As winter approaches, residents of these camps express deep concern over their lack of safe shelter, insufficient basic necessities, and severe economic hardship and unemployment.
This report is based on field assessments conducted by our local partner, Saifrood Unity and Aid Organization (SUAO), which has been present in Kunar province since 16 October 2025, collecting data and documenting the living conditions of earthquake-affected families.
Rebuild Aid stands in solidarity with the victims and their families during this difficult time and continues to support efforts to assess needs and advocate for urgent humanitarian assistance in the region.
