About DRC

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is one of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations, established in 1956 and headquartered in Copenhagen. DRC operates in more than 40 countries worldwide, providing emergency relief, protection, and long-term solutions to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and vulnerable migrants affected by conflict and displacement.

Its mission is to protect, advocate, and promote durable solutions for people forced to flee, ensuring they can rebuild their lives in safety and dignity. DRC’s global mandate includes humanitarian response, peacebuilding, human rights protection, migration policy, and development cooperation.

In addition to its field operations, DRC runs the Diaspora Programme, which supports diaspora-led humanitarian and development initiatives. This programme recognizes the essential role that diaspora organizations play in providing assistance, mobilizing resources, and strengthening community resilience in their countries of origin.

Partnership with Rebuild Aid

Rebuild Aid is a proud partner of DRC’s Diaspora Programme, a unique platform that brings together Afghan diaspora organizations based in Denmark and across Europe. Through this partnership, DRC has provided valuable capacity development, technical guidance, and financial support to strengthen Rebuild Aid’s operational, administrative, and programmatic capacities.

The collaboration includes:

  • Capacity-Building Workshops: DRC has trained Rebuild Aid in project design, results-based management, safeguarding, financial accountability, and humanitarian coordination.
  • Networking and Coordination: Through DRC-facilitated forums, Rebuild Aid actively participates in diaspora coordination platforms, connecting with other Afghan organizations working on humanitarian and development initiatives for Afghanistan.
  • Legal and Administrative Guidance: DRC’s experts provide advice on NGO governance, financial management, and donor compliance, helping Rebuild Aid maintain strong organizational standards.

Funded Project: “Reviving River – Digging Wells in Ghor Province”

Under DRC’s Diaspora Humanitarian Support initiative, Rebuild Aid received a grant to implement the project “Reviving River: Digging Wells in Ghor Province”, Afghanistan.

The project focuses on improving access to clean and sustainable water sources in drought-affected communities in Ghor—one of Afghanistan’s most climate-vulnerable regions. Through this initiative:

  • Multiple deep wells were constructed and equipped with hand pumps to provide safe drinking water for hundreds of households.
  • Community members were trained in well maintenance to ensure sustainability and local ownership.
  • The intervention also supported local livelihoods by reducing the time and burden—particularly for women and children—spent collecting water from distant or unsafe sources.

This project reflects Rebuild Aid’s commitment to locally led, diaspora-supported humanitarian action, combining technical assistance from Denmark with direct implementation through trusted partners in Afghanistan.

The Value of Partnership

The collaboration between Rebuild Aid and DRC highlights how diaspora organizations can bridge the gap between communities in Denmark and crisis-affected regions. By participating in DRC’s diaspora engagement network, Rebuild Aid benefits from shared learning, mentorship, and access to a professional humanitarian framework, while maintaining its grassroots connections and local legitimacy in Afghanistan.

This partnership has also strengthened Rebuild Aid’s ability to coordinate with international humanitarian actors, align with global standards, and contribute effectively to Afghanistan’s recovery through sustainable, community-centered projects.

Looking Ahead

Rebuild Aid aims to continue its collaboration with DRC by:

  • Expanding diaspora capacity-building activities and participation in the DRC–DEMAC network.
  • Developing new proposals focused on climate resilience, livelihoods, and protection.
  • Advocating for greater recognition and funding for Afghan diaspora-led initiatives that promote local leadership and sustainable development.

Together, DRC and Rebuild Aid share a common vision—to empower displaced and marginalized communities, foster inclusion, and create opportunities for lasting peace and resilience in Afghanistan.
