Respect human dignity and the rights, agency and choices of people affected by crisis, poverty, displacement and inequality.
Rebuild Aid Foreningen | Humanitarian Aid & Community Recovery
Rebuilding lives through humanitarian assistance, resilience, and sustainable recovery
Rebuild Aid is a Danish, volunteer-driven and membership-based civil society organisation. We believe that humanitarian and development work must be guided by integrity, openness, responsible stewardship and respect for the rights and dignity of every person.
For Rebuild Aid, accountability is not limited to financial reporting. It means listening to people affected by our work, explaining our decisions, involving communities and local partners, protecting people from harm, preventing misuse of resources, responding to concerns, learning from evidence and accepting responsibility when we fall short. We are accountable to:
Our policies and procedures establish the standards expected of Board members, members, employees, volunteers, consultants, partner organisations, representatives, suppliers and others acting for or on behalf of Rebuild Aid.
These commitments guide every programme, partnership and decision made in Rebuild Aid’s name.
Respect human dignity and the rights, agency and choices of people affected by crisis, poverty, displacement and inequality.
Provide assistance according to assessed needs and vulnerability, without discrimination or improper influence.
Communicate honestly about who we are, what we can and cannot provide, how decisions are made and how resources are used.
Involve communities and local partners in assessment, design, implementation, monitoring and learning.
Ensure that people can ask questions, provide feedback and make complaints safely, including anonymously, without fear of retaliation or loss of assistance.
Prevent sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, child abuse, fraud, corruption, diversion, conflicts of interest and other misconduct.
Use funds, equipment and other resources only for their approved purposes and seek quality, economy and value for money.
Protect personal information and share public information in a way that does not expose individuals or communities to harm.
Monitor results, examine unintended effects, learn from experience and make documented improvements.
Disclose significant concerns to the appropriate governing body, donor or authority when required by law, contract or policy.
Accountability is a continuing responsibility. It applies before a project begins, throughout implementation, after activities are completed and whenever Rebuild Aid becomes aware of a concern involving its people, partners, resources or programmes.
Accountability is reciprocal. It is built through honest information, fair decisions, safe participation and clearly defined responsibilities.
People affected by our work have the right to be treated with dignity, receive relevant and understandable information, participate meaningfully, understand how assistance decisions are made and raise concerns safely. Assistance must never be exchanged for money, favours, labour, political support, sexual activity or any personal benefit.
As a membership-based association, Rebuild Aid is accountable to its members through democratic governance, the General Assembly, elected leadership, approved plans and budgets, and access to appropriate organisational information. Members and volunteers are also responsible for following Rebuild Aid’s Code of Conduct and other applicable policies.
Donors are entitled to accurate proposals, responsible financial management, evidence of results, timely reporting and honest communication about risks, changes, challenges and mistakes. Restricted funds and donated goods must be used for the purpose for which they were provided.
Rebuild Aid seeks partnerships based on mutual respect, clearly defined responsibilities, open dialogue, capacity strengthening and local ownership. Accountability is reciprocal: Rebuild Aid monitors agreed requirements while also providing timely decisions, fair communication, appropriate support and responsible management of shared risks.
Rebuild Aid is responsible for complying with applicable Danish law, regulatory requirements, contractual obligations and legitimate donor conditions. We aim to make meaningful institutional, programme and financial information accessible while protecting confidentiality, privacy, safety and legal rights.
Organisations and individuals competing for or delivering work for Rebuild Aid must be treated fairly and consistently. In return, they are expected to act lawfully and ethically, disclose conflicts of interest, avoid bribery and exploitation, protect confidential information and comply with the standards included in their agreements.
Rebuild Aid is formally registered in Denmark as a non-profit, membership-based association. The General Assembly is the organisation’s highest authority. Members elect the Board and approve the organisation’s overall direction in accordance with its statutes.
The Treasurer and relevant finance functions oversee financial administration and reporting within the authority delegated by the Board. No individual should control an entire financial transaction from initiation to approval, payment and reconciliation. Responsibilities are separated as far as reasonably possible for an organisation of Rebuild Aid’s size, with additional Board oversight where staffing or volunteer capacity is limited.
Board members, members, volunteers and others acting on behalf of Rebuild Aid must place the organisation’s purpose above personal benefit. Actual, potential and perceived conflicts of interest must be disclosed, recorded and managed. A person with a conflict must not improperly influence the related decision and may be required to withdraw from discussion, evaluation or approval.
Rebuild Aid’s humanitarian work is guided by the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and operational independence.
Human suffering must be addressed wherever it is found. Our purpose is to protect life and health and uphold human dignity.
Assistance is based on assessed needs and vulnerability. Priority is given to the most urgent cases without adverse distinction.
Humanitarian assistance must not be used to favour a party to a conflict or promote a political, ethnic, religious or ideological agenda.
Humanitarian decisions must remain independent from political, military, economic or other objectives that are not humanitarian.
Do no harm. Protect rights. Remove barriers.
We aim to apply a do-no-harm and protection-centred approach. Project decisions should consider barriers and risks affecting women and girls, children, older people, persons with disabilities, displaced people, returnees, minority groups and others who may face exclusion or heightened protection concerns. Participation must be safe, accessible and meaningful.
Rebuild Aid does not condition assistance on membership, religious belief, ethnicity, political opinion, social status or personal connection. Selection criteria must be relevant to the project, documented, communicated in an appropriate form and applied consistently. Where resources cannot meet all verified needs, prioritisation decisions should be recorded and capable of explanation.
Transparency must never put people at risk. As a Danish organisation, Rebuild Aid is committed to processing personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Danish Data Protection Act and other applicable requirements.
Read Our Privacy PolicyDepending on the activity, Rebuild Aid may process information relating to members, volunteers, donors, partners, suppliers, job or volunteer applicants, website users, people participating in programmes, complainants and other stakeholders. This may include contact information, membership and donation records, programme data, identification information, financial documentation, photographs, case stories and, where necessary and lawful, sensitive or safeguarding-related information.
Our data-protection approach is based on the following principles:

Only information reasonably necessary for the stated purpose should be collected.
04 - Accuracy
Reasonable steps are taken to keep relevant information accurate and up to date.

Access to sensitive information, including safeguarding reports, complaints, beneficiary records, identity documents, health information, bank data and contact details, is limited according to role and need. Sensitive information should be transferred and stored securely and shared only where there is a lawful and legitimate reason.
Where personal data must be shared with a local partner, service provider, donor, auditor or other authorised party, Rebuild Aid seeks to define the purpose, responsibility, confidentiality and security requirements. Where data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, relevant GDPR transfer requirements and safeguards must be considered.
People may have rights under applicable data-protection law, including rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and data portability, depending on the circumstances and lawful basis.
